So I just sort of randomly discovered that it was exactly one year ago today that I posted my first entry here. Where has the time gone?
Not much has changed in the last year. I’m a little lazier when it comes to putting posts up here, but other than that, everything’s still pretty much the same. Only now I know how to navigate the WordPress plumbing just a little bit better than I did 365 days ago.
I guess the one big difference is that now I’m a recorded musician.
However, as of this weekend, I’m back to being single again. (Yes. Again. This one seems destined to stick.) So that’s different than it was a year ago. Or actually, is it? Kat and I have broken up and gotten back together with more frequency than a ham radio. It’s hard to keep track of the various points of reference that might help me remember whether she and I were actually together at any given point.
I’m sad about that, to be sure, but life goes on. And I enjoy life.
Anyway, as I was looking back at some of my older posts, I can’t help but think that I’ve really lost some steam when it comes to clever posting. What happened to posts like Stormtrooper Sauna, or this Christmas story, or the one about Mike Ditka? Those were good posts. Lately I’ve just been looking for filler. I haven’t been producing much in the way of original material.
Therefore, I’m making a vow before all of you now that I will attempt to regain the blogging form I had once upon a time. Back when the ideas were fresh and the prose clever.
Did I tell you that I have a betta fish at work now? (See picture in the Flickr widget to the right.) It was actually a gift from Kat. (Now that we’re through, do I have to give back the fish? She’s still got my old original Nintendo system and my Nintendo 64. How do I get those back?) But anyway, the fish’s name is Knuckles (on account of he used to be a gold glove boxer). He had to retire after his last bout against a Lake Erie catfish. Now Knuckles does some modeling when he’s not producing records for up and coming bands. A real renaissance fish, that one.
Have you read this post? It’s a good one. A little long, but good. It’s about a trip to Vegas and my old golfish Lefty. Hopefully Knuckles’s life ends up being a bit more fulfilling than poor old Lefty’s. He was a good fish, but I never got to say goodbye.
Anyway, so after a full year of blogging, I think I’m ready to take the next big step: lead columnist for the Des Moines Register. I should proabably get my resume together to send over there.

Iowa is a great place. What other state can boast the State Fair Butter Cow AND the crookest street in the world?? We’d be proud to have you. And there are women here. Like beta fish in the sea. And only some of them wear overalls.

Congrats, Mike…both on the beta and, well, you know. I’m proud of you!
